The Kheda movement was started by farmers under the leadership of local leader Mohanlal Pandya. After returning to India, Mahatma Gandhi’s third important movement was the Satyagraha to solve the problems of the farmers of the Kheda region of Gujarat. At that time, the farmers in Kheda were unable to pay the land revenue due to the destruction of crops. The condition of small farmers was worse than that of the rich farmers.
Kheda Satyagraha – 1918
- Along with this, the agricultural labourers of a lower caste called ‘Bariya’ were also troubled due to rising prices.
- Gandhiji took over the leadership of the Kheda Satyagraha in March 1918.
- Earlier, local leaders like Mohanlal Pandya were raising the problems of the farmers.
- This movement was suspended in June 1918 after the government gave some concessions.
- The area of this movement was limited. Gandhiji’s influence spread in Gujarat through the Kheda movement.
- Due to Gandhiji’s principle of non-violence and Vaishnav devotion, the Patidar farmers always supported Mahatma Gandhi.
- Indulal Yagnik gave full support to Gandhiji in this Satyagraha. Vallabhbhai Patel and Shankarlal Bankat also supported Gandhiji.
- This Satyagraha continued till June 1918. In the end, the government accepted all the demands of the farmers.
